Too much homework!!!

What is this world coming to?  I'm sitting at home on a sunny day grading papers while my wife takes her dog for a walk and gets these great photos with her phone!  The California Mountain Kingsnake, Lampropeltis zonata, is a beauty that I've only seen DOR.  My day will come!
As if serving as punctuation, Bib also saw this Checkspot at one of our favorite stops by Spanish Creek.  I'll see lots of these during the summer, and some will be means for my favorite Goldenrod Crab Spider.

  1. Wow! Beautiful snake! While hiking with my son Hawkeye's Boy Scout troop some 10+ years ago along Deer Creek (off Hwy 32), one zipped through our line of hkers and disappeared before we could get any photos - but that most gorgeous snake and quick glimpse is still burned in my memory! I would absolutely LOVE to see another one in the wild - this gives me hope!

  2. Believe it or not, on the following Tuesday I was lucky enough to see a pair of them mating in the same general area where my wife spotted the first one. Then again, today (5/24) I spotted another one but it was too quick for my camera skills.
