Post Mortem
On my drive home after a rewarding morning hike, I couldn't help but explore the roadside ditches once again. I love following the milkweeds through their entire life cycles, so this picture of a Purple Milkweed pod is a harbinger of the fluffy, air-borne seeds that will emerge soon. Its neighbor, a still-blooming Showy Milkweed, was visited by an attractive butterfly that was not at all spooked by the close approach of my camera. Turns out it had died in a beautiful pose, for when I touched it, it fell stiffly to the ground, still beautiful.

Hi Joe, I find your posts interesting and your images great documentation of small creatures and plants. It's too bad wolves, bears, mountain lions and other rare mammals don't die in beautiful picturesque poses in places we can easily find like your beautiful butterfly.
